How to Apply for a GB and XI EORI Number

Who Needs an EORI Number?

An Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number is required for any business that moves goods into or out of the United Kingdom. This includes imports, exports, and transit shipments.

Applying for a GB EORI Number

You must apply for a GB EORI number if your business is based in the UK and you engage in international trade. To complete the application, you will need:

  • Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
  • Business start date and Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code (available via Companies House)
  • Your VAT number and the effective date of registration (if VAT registered)
  • Your National Insurance number (for individuals or sole traders)

If your business is not based in the UK, you do not need to provide a UTR, SIC code, or National Insurance number.

To apply, visit the official UK government website, sign in using your Government Gateway credentials (or create an account), and complete the application form.

You will usually receive your GB EORI number immediately unless HMRC needs to conduct additional checks. In such cases, processing can take up to five working days.

Applying for an XI EORI Number (Northern Ireland)

If you move goods to or from Northern Ireland, you may also need an XI EORI number. Before applying, you must first obtain a GB EORI number.

To apply for an XI EORI, you will need:

  • Your XI VAT number (if applicable)
  • Any EU VAT numbers you hold
  • Two documents proving your permanent business establishment in Northern Ireland, such as a bank statement and a utility bill

Proof of establishment is not required if:

  • Your GB EORI application listed a Northern Ireland address
  • Your business is not based in Northern Ireland, but you require an XI EORI to complete specific declarations or act as a carrier

Processing for an XI EORI number typically takes up to five working days.

Check Application Status

You can check the status of your EORI application or update your information using the official UK government portal.
